To examine the ability of adults with brain injury or psychiatric illness to establish categories and switch conceptual sets. It uses plastic utensils that can be sorted according to size, colour and utensil type. The test emphasises qualitative aspects of performance and is based on dynamic interactional principles of testing. Guidelines for facilitating performance through the use of cues are provided. The extent to which performance can be modified can be directly used to choose and design an intervention program. It has been piloted with people with brain injury and schizophrenia, aged 18 to 86. It can be administered at a bedside in 15 to 25 minutes. Manual is included.

The L.O.T.C.A. (Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment) Battery is a cognitive battery of tests for both primary assessment and ongoing evaluation in the occupational therapy treatment of brain injured patients. The L.O.T.C.A. Battery has proved to be reliable and valid in providing the therapist with a profile of patient's cognitive abilities, which is necessary for planning treatment It consists of 20 sub-tests divided into four areas: orientation, visual and spatial perception, visual motor organisation and thinking operations The battery has been standardised for the age range 20-70 years using traumatic brain injury and CVA patients within a control group The Battery's validity is further supported by the developmental age standards determined from a sample of 120 children aged 6-12 years, which show age progression according to the hierarchical order of the abilities assessed by the battery The L.O.T.C.A. Battery contains: card decks, coloured blocks, peg and pegboard set, scissors, 56 page manual and other materials, all packed in a carry case.
